AVRO 504N - An ab initio training biplane powered by a 215 hp Lynx IVC derived from an original design of pre-WWI origin, the Avro 504N had been retired by the RAF by early 1939 but seven civil examples (all ex-RAF) were impressed in 1940 and used primarily as glider tugs by Special Duty Flight, particu-larly in connection with radar develop-ment. Three 504s were still at Thame in October 1944 on formation of 1 GTS, and were towing such sailplanes as Minimoa and Kirby Kite, but were then replaced by Hinds and Hectors. Believed to be only aircraft of World War I vintage to serve with RAF in World War II. Twelve Avro 504Ns in service with Belgian Aeronautique Militaire until May 1940 were then evacu-ated to France. One or two survived in Greece until 1940. |
