Cierva W.9 - The Cierva Autogiro Co - formed in 1943 out of the rotary-wing department of G & J Weir - obtained a contract for two experi-mental helicopters to Spec E.16/43. Completed late-1944, (he first Cierva W.9 (eventu-ally to be marked PX203) had a manually-controlled tilting main rotor hub and used a jet of warm air from an engine-driven blow-er for torque control. The engine was a 210 hp DH Gipsy Queen II. After being dam-aged in ground running, the Cierva W.9 was rebuilt, slightly modified, and entered full flight testing in mid-1945.
