COMMONWEALTH AIRCRAFT WACKETT

COMMONWEALTH AIRCRAFT WACKETT - Tandem two-seat ab initio trainer designed to meet RAAF Specification 3/38. Two prototypes (CA-2) ordered October 1938, with 130 hp de Havilland Gipsy Major in-line engines, first flown September 19 and early November 1939 respectively. Both converted to have 175 hp Warner Super Scarab radial engines in May/July 1940 and production order for 200 similarly-powered CA-6 Wackett Trainers placed June 1940 to comply with RAAF Specification 1/40. First production CA-6 flown February 6, 1941, and delivery of 200th completed April 1942. Served in RAAF as intermediate trainer (between Tiger Moth and Wirraway) primarily at Nos 1,3,8 and 11 EFTSs, and at 1 Air Observer's School, 1, 2 and 3 Wireless Air Gunner's Schools and 5 OTU.
