COMMONWEALTH WOOMERA
- Twin-engined three-seat bomber designed to RAAF Development Specification
2/11 under direction of L J Wackett. Design work initiated April
1940 and single CA-4 prototype (A23-1001) flown at Fishermen's Bend
on September 19, 1941. Powered by two 1,200 hp Pratt & Whitney
R-1830-S3C4-G radial engines, CA-4 was armed with four 0.303-in
(7.7-mm) machine-guns in the nose, two each in remotely-controlled
barbettes at rear of nacelles above the wings, and single similar
gun in ventral position. Provision for four 250-lb (113-kg) bombs
in bays in nacelles and up to 4,000 Ib (1,815 kg) on three external
fuselage stations, or two Mk XII torpedoes. CA-4 lost on test flight
on January 15, 1943, by which time production order placed (early
1942) for 105 developed CA-11 version. First (and only) CA-11 (A23-1)
completed mid-1944, first flown July 7, 1944, with nose armament
of two 20-mm cannon and two 0.303-in (7.7-mm) Brownings. Programme
cancelled September 1944 when next six aircraft in final assembly
stage.
