GENERAL AIRCRAFT G.A.L. 38

GENERAL AIRCRAFT G.A.L. 38 - The General Aircraft G.A.L. 38 was designed (in common with the Airspeed AS. 39) to Specification S.23/37 for a carrier-based slow-flying reconnaissance aircraft with a long duration to serve in the 'fleet shadowing' role. Powered by four 130 hp Niagara V engines, the prototype (P1758) flew in 1940, initially with triple tail unit and later with large single fin and rudder. The advent of airborne radar rendered the 'fleet shadowing' role obsolete, and construction of a second prototype was abandoned.

Max speed, 115 mph (185 km/h). Gross weight, 9,585 (4,348 kg). Span, 55 ft 10 in (17.02 m). Length, 36ft 1 in (10.99 m).
