HAWKER TOMTIT - Six examples of the HAWKER TOMTIT training biplane, designed in 1928 by Sydney Camm, flew with the RAF on communications duties for much of the war. Originally built for the RAF, they had been sold for civil use in 1935, and continued to operate in civil markings without being impressed. The engine was a 150 hp Mongoose IIIC. Two similar Hawker Tomtits supplied to RCAF in 1930 (serials 139,140) served until mid-1943 with No 7 (GP) Sqn, but four supplied pre-war to RNZAF were relegated to instruc-tional airframe status in 1939. Max speed, 124 mph (200 km/h). Gross weight, 1,750 Ib (795 kg). Span, 28ft 6'h in (8.69 m). Length, 23ft 8 in (7.21 m). |
