MILES M.18 - Prospective successor for Magister designei as private venture and first flown December 4, 1938, with 130 hp DH Gipsy Major I Srs I, combining basic M.14 fuselage with new thick-section wing, initially tested on ex-civil M.14A (U-6). Three further M.I8s flowi late 1939-1942, with 150 hp Blackbun Cirrus Major III engine and variety of tria features such as tricycle u/c (on Mk I), cabin enclosure over tandem cockpits (on Mk III and full-span slots and large-chord flaps with inset ailerons (on Mk IV) as designed for use on Supermarine S. 12/40 Seagull. Max speed, 135 mph (217 km/h). Gross weight, 1,903 lb (863 kg). Span 31 ft 0 in (9.45m). Length, 24 ft 10 in (7.57m). |
