NOORDUYN NORSEMAN

NOORDUYN NORSEMAN - Single-engined six/nine-seat monoplane designed for Canadian 'bush' operation, first flown (on floats) on November 14, 1935, powered by 420 hp Wright Whirlwind. RCAF acquisition began early 1940 with purchase of 47 Noorduyn Norseman IV, powered by 550 hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-S3H1 Wasp engine, for general trans­port duties. A further 30 Noorduyn Norseman IVW wireless trainers followed, equipped to seat five students and an instructor. RCAF also acquired one Mk III and the sole Mk II, ex-civil, both converted to Mk IV standard. Starting 1940, USAAF acquired total of 749 C-64A Noorduyn Norseman utility transports with R-1340-AN-1 Wasp engines, similar to the Mk W, plus seven service trial YC-64s and six interim-standard UC-64Bs. Of this total, 20 supplied to RCAF as Noorduyn Norseman VI and three transferred to USN with designation JA-1. USAAF also supplied 14 C-64As to RAAF in 1943, two to Britain for RAF evaluation and, in March 1945, eight to R Norwegian AF to form Norseman Flight before transfer from UK to Norway.
