PERCIVAL MEW GULL - Single-seat sporting and racing monoplane, first flown in March 1934. Six built by 1937, of which three in UK at outbreak of war. A scheme to fit pairs of Vickers 0.303-in (7.7-mm) machine guns to each of these for use as 'panic' fighters in 1940 did not proceed. Percival Mew Gull G-AFAA reportedly loaned to de Havilland at Hatfield (possibly for propeller development), severely damaged in forced landing in 1940, and subsequently written off. The engine was a 205 hp DH Gipsy Six Srs II. Max. speed, 235 mph (378 kmlh). Gross weight, 2,125 Ib (964 kg). Span, 22 ft 9 in (6.93 m). Length, 20 ft 3 in (6.17m). |
