SARO LONDON - Twin-engined GP and patrol flying-boat SARO A.27 London developed to meet Specification R.24/31; prototype first flown in March 1934. Production totalled 30, initially Mk I with 690 hp Bristol Pegasus HIM.3 but principally Mk II to Specification R.3/35 with 980 hp Pegasus X engines. All but two still in service in September 1939, with Nos 201 and 240 Sqns for North Sea patrols and No 202 at Gibraltar. Operational until early 1941, then in training role at No 4 (Coastal) OTU until summer 1942. Armament comprised three 0.303-in (7.7-mm) machine guns in bows and dorsal cockpit, plus 2,000 Ib (907 kg) of bombs. Max speed, 155 mph (249 kmlh) at 6,250 ft (1,905 m). Cruising speed, 100 mph (161 kmlh). Range, up to 2,600 mis (4,184 km). Empty weight, 12,800 Ib (5,806 kg). Gross weight, 22,000 Ib (9,980 kg). Span, 80 ft 0 in (24.38 m).
