SHORT S.17/L

SHORT S.17/L - Two 38-seat transport biplanes built for Imperial Airways as landplane derivatives of Short S.17 Kent flying-boat; first flown (Scylla) on March 26 and (Syrinx) on May 17, 1934. Powered by four 900 hp Bristol Pegasus XC engines. Both aircraft used by National Air Communications, 1939-40, flying stores and personnel to France. Impressed for RAF March 1940, but Syrinx grounded from December 1939 and Scylla damaged beyond repair in April 1940 before transfer to RAF.

Max speed, 137 mph (220 kmlh). Gross weight, 33,500 Ib (15,200 kg). Span, 113 ft 0 in (34.4 m). Length, 83 ft 10 in (25.5 m).
