SHORT SCION SENIOR - Eleven-seat light transport conceived as enlarged derivative of Short S.16 Scion, The Short S.22 Scio Senior was first flown October 22, 1935, and powered by four 90 hp Pobjoy Niagara III engines. Six built, and used primarily in floatplane configuration. One (seaplane) exported to Sierra Leone, lost in August 1939. Three (seaplanes) exported to Rangoon, of which one later to Palestine and (converted to land-plane) impressed by RAF in August 1940 for service at Lydda until September 1942. One (landplane) exported to Iraq, impressed by RAF February 1942 and lost in Egypt in September 1943. Sixth aircraft bought by Air Ministry as L9786 for research into hull design, fitted with central float (half-scale model of Sunderland hull) and strutted wing-tip floats. First flown October 18, 1939, and survived until 1944. Data for landplane. |
