SLINGSBY KIRBY CADET - Single-seat intermediate training glider Slingsby T.7 Kirby Cadet was first flown January 1936. From pre-war production of 22, two went to local Slingsby ATC squadron at Kirkbymoorside and several others impressed from 1942 onwards. In late 1943, OR. 142 was drawn up for a training glider to be suitable for ATC use and Specification 20/43 required that it should be capable of being flown at heights up to 100 ft (30.5 m) by unskilled cadets. The T.7 was selected to meet this requirement and the type was then named Cadet TX Mk.I. Production totalled 376, by Slingsby (226), Fox and Davies (30), Ottley Motors Ltd (30) and Papworth Industries and Enham Industries (90); six of this total were exported to Canada and more than 100 of the Slingsby batch were delivered post-war. Gross weight, 513 Ib (233 kg). Span, 38ft 6 in (11.73m). |
