Spitfire PR Mk XIX: Final photo-recce variant, based on Supermarine Spitfire
F Mk XIV, with additional provision for pressurised cockpit. Starting
April 1944, 22 aircraft delivered without pressurisation, and with Griffon
65 engines and same wing tankage as Merlin-engined PR Mk XI. Prototype
definitive PR Mk XIX (Supermarine Type 389) completed October 1944 with
pressurisation, Griffon 66 and extra 20-Imp gal (91-1) fuel tankage in
each wing. Cameras as Mk XI. Provision for 90- or 170-Imp gal (409- or
773-1) tank under fuselage. Total of 225 built (Supermarine Type 390),
production continuing until mid-1945. Service use began May 1944 with
No 542 Sqn.
