SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE (Griffon, photo-reconnaissance) - Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk XIX: Final photo-recce variant, based on Supermarine Spitfire F Mk XIV, with additional provision for pressurised cockpit. Starting April 1944, 22 aircraft delivered without pressurisation, and with Griffon 65 engines and same wing tankage as Merlin-engined PR Mk XI. Prototype definitive PR Mk XIX (Supermarine Type 389) completed October 1944 with pressurisation, Griffon 66 and extra 20-Imp gal (91-1) fuel tankage in each wing. Cameras as Mk XI. Provision for 90- or 170-Imp gal (409- or 773-1) tank under fuselage. Total of 225 built (Supermarine Type 390), production continuing until mid-1945. Service use began May 1944 with No 542 Sqn. Max speed, 445 mph (716 kmlh) at 26,000 ft (7,925 m). Gross weight, 10,450 Ib (4,740 kg). Span, 36 ft 10 in. Length, 32 ft Sin (9.96m). |
