VICKERS WELLINGTON (Transport variants)

VICKERS WELLINGTON (Transport variants) - Plans for a troop-transport conversion of the basic Vickers Wellington bomber were drawn up initially to meet an urgent requirement in the Middle East, as Vickers Type 437. Designation Vickers Wellington IX assigned, but probably applicable only to converted Mk 1C P2522, which served with No 24 Sqn in 1942-43. Further conversions for use by No 24 Sqn took designation Vickers Wellington C Mk IA or C Mk 1C, depending on original bomber variant converted, and were of several configurations, some with rounded nose and tail fairings, others with turret-shaped fairings, suitably painted and fitted with dummy guns. Eventually, designations Vickers Wellington C Mk XV and C Mk XVI adopted for freight and passenger transport versions respectively. Users included Nos 232 and 242 Sqns, as well as No 24.
