WEIR W.6 - Single prototype two-seat helicopter ordered by Air Ministry to Operational Requirement OR.66 in 1938 after successful testing of Weir W.5. Specification 28/38 written around Weir proposal and issued early 1939, calling for helicopter capable of hovering over fixed spot in 20-mph (32-km) wind for at least 15 minutes at height of at least 500 ft (152 m), with a rate of climb of 800 ft/min (4.06 m/sec) and service ceiling of 12,500 ft (3,810 m). Side-by-side three-bladed rotor configuration and powered by a 205 hp DH Gipsy Six Srs 2 engine. Tandem seating with provision for dual controls. Prototype R5269 first flown on October 27, 1939, and subsequently lifted three occupants (first helicopter in world to do so). Testing stopped in June 1940 after about 70 hrs completed, and aircraft stored for remainder of war. Second prototype reportedly planned as Z2130, not built. Max speed, 90 mph (149 kmlh). Gross weight, 2,360 Ib (1,070 kg). Rotor diameter (each), 26ft (7.92 m). Fuselage length, 22ft (6.7 m). |
