AVRO TUTOR

AVRO 621 TUTOR - The Chadwick-designed Avro 621, flown in 1929, provided the RAF with a replacement for the Avro 504N basic trainer, leading to production of 381 Tutors and 15 Avro 646 Sea Tutors. Some 200, plus five Sea Tutors, still on RAF strength when WWII began, and extensively used initially in training role, later as station hacks, etc. At least one each used in Hong Kong and Singapore. Three civil Tutors also impressed, 1940/41. Six Tutors acquired 1931 by RCAF, flown until 1943. Danish Navy had five (three-locally-built) at time of German occupation, but stored without use. Survivors of 29 Tutors bought by Greek Air Force survived until 1941. SAAF still flying many Tutors in 1939, of some 60 acquired, primarily from local production. Standard Tutor powered by 240 hp Lynx IVC.
