HAWKER HECTOR

HAWKER HECTOR - Developed under Sydney Camm's direction during 1935 as an army co-operation aircraft to Specification 14/35, based on Hawker Hind bomber but with 805 hp Dagger IIIMS engine and suitable role equipment. Prototype flew on February 14, 1936, and production of 178 by Westland completed between February and December 1937. Entered service with No 4 (AC) Squadron February 1937 but withdrawn from all seven regular AC squadrons by 1939 and then serving only with five AAF squadrons, seeing brief operational service against German targets in N France in 1940. Many Hawker Hectors used 1940-42 as tugs for Hotspur gliders in 38 Group training units.
